The Week of Dec. 5 - Dec. 9

Only 10 more school days until our holiday break. This year has flown by!

In Math, we are learning about 3-D shapes such as cylinders, spheres, cones and cubes.

In Science, we are describing the physical characteristics of plants and animals.

During Reading Workshop we are still reading and comparing different versions of The Gingerbread Man. Our sight words this week are so and do, our word family is -ag. We are working in guided reading groups on using our strategies when we read. Have your child refer to their "Helping Hand" I sent one home in the packet from conferences.

During Writing Workshop we are working on editing out writing with the help of our friends and teacher. We are writing holiday stories.

In Social Studies we are learning about holidays that are celebrated all over the world.

Homework:
Read 20 minutes every night and record it in the red homework folder.

Important Dates:
Dec. 8- Pictures, cocoa and cookies with Santa at 5:30pm, students can wear PJ's too!

The Week of Nov. 21 - Nov. 22

Only two days of school this week! We will be wrapping up our current units these two days and continuing to learn about the Thanksgiving holiday.

The Week of Nov. 14 - Nov. 18

What a busy week we had last week. We had so much fun on our field trip to Dewbery Farms. Here are a couple of our friends writings over what they saw.

In Math we are learning about fractions and ordinals. In Kindergarten we just learn about half and whole. We also add the words first, second, third, fourth and fifth to our vocabulary as we put things in order.

In Science, we are talking about plants still. Ask your child about our science word of the week!

During Reader's Workshop we are adding the words yes, am and no to our word wall. Our word family of the week is the -am family. I will send home another note this week if your child still does not know all their yellow words. Use the flash cards I sent home last week to practice! Students who know all their yellow words will be receiving their blue words next. I will be testing again next Friday. Our goal is to have our whole class know all of our words! We will be using different reading strategies to decode words we don't know.

In Writer's Workshop we are working on writing stories about ourselves and editing them. We want to be using our sight words in our writing regularly.

During Social Studies we are learning about how holidays and traditions. This week we will be learning about the pilgrims and how our lives are much different than theirs.

Homework:
Keep reading! Don't forget to write it down and sign your child's red homework folder. Library will be back to normal this week so make sure library books and bags need to be back at school Wednesday.

The Week of Nov. 7 - Nov. 11

We have a busy week in our classroom!

In Math we are continuing to compare numbers using the words more, less and same. Practice counting and comparing objects at home to practice this skill.

In Science, we are talking about plants still. Ask your child about our science word of the week!

During Reader's Workshop we are adding the words do and it to our word wall. Our word family of the week is the -it family. Keep working on your yellow sight words, I sent a list of the ones they are still working on home last week. Look for yellow flash cards in Tuesday folders this week. I will be testing again on Friday. Our goal is to have our whole class know all of our words! We will be reading about farms in anticipation of our field trip.

In Writer's Workshop we are working on writing stories about ourselves and editing them. We want to be using our sight words in our writing regularly.

During Social Studies we are learning about how everyone works! We will learn about the difference between goods and services.

Week of October 31 - November 4

Wow, I can't believe it is already October! This Tuesday you will be receiving information on our field trip, it will be next week Thursday the 10th. Please read all of the information and send back any forms.

In Math we are starting a new unit on more and less. We will practice putting numbers and objects in order from greatest to least and least to greatest. Practice at home by having your child make sets of objects and then have them make a new set with "two more" or "three less" etc.

In Science we are continuing to talk about plants and plant life cycles. Their ziplock bags with their lima bean seeds will be coming home today.

In Reading we are using pictures and meaning to help us decode unknown words. Our sight words for the week are to, come and car. Our word family is the -ar family. We are trying to get our class to know all of their yellow words (beginning of the year sight words). I will be accessing them this week so if you see a list of words come home those are the words they don't know yet. Please keep practicing them at home!

In Writing we are still learning to write and illustrate our own stories. Practice at home by writing sentences and drawing matching pictures about your daily activities.

Homework:
Keep reading 10-20 minutes a day and recording it in their red folders.

The Week of Oct. 24 - Oct. 28

Wow, I can't believe we are already in the second 9 weeks, this year is flying by!

During Math time we are still working on counting groups to ten and finding different ways to make ten. Students are still working in their workstation groups and also meeting with me for guided math practice in small groups.

In Science we are waiting to see our lima been seeds grow! Check out this great lima bean diagram by one of our Rockets! This week will be looking at and exploring pumpkins.

During Reader's Workshop we will be adding and, love and have. We will be brainstorming words that belong in the -ot word family. We will also be working on finding a quiet spot in the room to read to ourselves. Starting this week we will be getting together with our friends in Ms. Bowen's 2nd grade class to read to each other. We are very excited to meet our reading buddies! 

In Writer's Workshop we are working on taking a small moment and stretching it out to write a nice detailed story.

We are finished with our unit on wants and needs, check out these great thinking maps by two of our friends that compared our shelter with the shelters of different animals. Now in Social Studies we are going to begin learning about different jobs and careers.


During computer lab we visited a new site called Brain Pop Jr, the link is at the bottom of this page. The username is AZFleming and the password is brainpop. There are lots of really neat Science videos on there to check out! 

Homework: Read 10-20 minutes with your child and record it in their red folder. Don't forget to send back your child's library book in the library bag for library on Wednesday!

Oct. 27- Multicultural Night, don't forget to send back the paper dolls wearing your culture's clothing!

The Week of Oct. 17 - Oct. 21

I hope everyone had a great, restful weekend!

This week in Math we are learning about counting to ten. Make sure you keep counting at home and practicing different ways to make sets of numbers (ex. 4 and 2 make 6, 3 and 3 make 6).

In Science we are starting our unit on Plants. We already started exploring seeds today. Check out one of our Rocket's great observations of a wet and dry lima been.

In Reading Workshop we are continuing learning our sight words. This weeks words are is, in and my. We are studying the -in word family. We are also looking for sight words in our books at school so to practice at home have your child point out sight words in books you are reading together. I also found a fun game online to practice beginning sounds. It's called Alphabet Goop. Try it out!

In Writing Workshop we are continuing to encourage students to use word wall words and turtle talk to write about small moments or memories.

In Social Studies we are learning about the difference between wants and needs.

The Week of Oct. 10 - Oct. 14

This week in math we will continue to focus on making groups of 1-5 objects. You can practice this at home by having your child make groups of various small objects and counting them for you.

In Science, we are learning about the basic needs of living things.

During our Reading Workshop time we are going to learn about the -og word family. Ask your child how many words they can name from the family. The sight words for the week are the, cat and dog.

In Writing Workshop we are working on labeling and making lists. A good way to practice at home is having your child help you make the grocery list or a list of your family members.

During Social Studies, we are talking about bullying and friends.

Important Dates:
Oct. 12- Picture Day! Make sure you turn in your order form if you haven't already.

Homework:
Read 20 minutes every night and make sure you are recording it in your child's red homework folder.
